The rusty areas to be treated with rust converter are immediately adjacent to non-rusted bare metal. The separation of rusted areas from non-rusted is not a distinct line, but is uneven and “jagged.” Instructions for rust converter say “do not apply to clean metal.” It is impossible to prevent some overspray from getting onto bare (clean) metal, and it is impossible mask off bare metal without also masking some rusted metal.

What should be done with overspray of rust converter on the bare metal?
