I am restoring a 1972 Yamaha XS2 motorcycle which, like most motorcycles of its era, has a plastic steering dampener knob about 3 inches across located above the handlebars. I don’t know a lot about plastics but the knob looks like old school Bakelite to me and is both faded and oxidized from flat or satin black to a gray / white color. A friend suggested rattle canning the knob with a self etching primer and painting it black. Your thoughts on durability of refinish, type of primer and paint to be used or if this is even a workable approach? The bike will be a rider and spend some time out of doors but once the dampening is adjusted there should be no need to readjust.
