I’m getting ready to work on some of the rust on my 1980 Fiat Spider. I’m using a grinder with a scotch pad and a twisted wire brush. The paint comes off pretty fast, but it looks like there is a layer of rust under the paint (see photos). I’ve read I need to take it down to bare (shiny) metal. But no amount of pressure on the grinder seems to take it down to bare shiny metal. It does looks smooth however. What do I do now?
It looks like this project is going to take a while. I want to cover up the shiny metal I do get so it doesn’t rust over. I was thinking I would just use a cheap self-etching primer, and just quickly grinding it off just before painting.
