I’m restoring an old police car and, as part of that, am grinding out the dynamat-like stuff the previous owner had installed (poorly). This is leaving some spots of bare metal (steel) that I obviously need to cover up. I don’t know the first thing about automotive paint, but I figure I can at least primer a few spots on the interior without taking it to a shop.

I eventually plan to install Lizard Skin sound and insulation and they require “a primer with at least 15% elongation”. What primer do I need? This part of the car will never see paint — just primer and lizard skin, and then carpet over that. I don’t know if I need self-etching primer, epoxy primer, “regular” primer or some other kind of primer.

    Any help is appreciated.
