Aluminum Cutting

    Hi I am new to this forum, and also to machine polishing. I am hoping that someone can give me an idea of the best way to cut aluminum. My project is a fuel tank on my truck, I spent about a day and a half wet sanding with 400 grit, followed by tripoli on a white airway wheel, then white rouge with a loose section flannel wheel. I removed a good bit of metal, but there is still a lot of cloudiness that looks like it is just below the surface. Also in a certain light, the entire tank looks scratched and uneven. Would a power hand sander be appropriate, or the greaseless compound? Any help appreciated. Here is a picture, but it hides a lot of what I am talking about:
