I just received a mercedes 450 sl. The wheels are original aluminum. The brake dust and crud on the back side of the wheels is difficult to remove. I’ve used some stuff I purchase locally to remove most of the grime. The stuff that remains is what I’m struggling with. I’ve used a brass brush to see how it would perform, I’m doing this a little bit at a time. I’m concerned that that brass might damage the Aluminum?
Some of the crud on the wheels looks like rust or like it is embedded in the aluminum. Some of it looks like little sandy bits of stuff that must have been hot when contacting the surface. The wheels don’t appear to be damaged, they just need some tlc.
What should I do to get these cleaned up?
