Gas welding and welding with gas can allow you to weld many different types of metal with very little supplies. Years ago all students learned how to set up a Gas Torch for welding, heating, and cutting but today it isn’t as common to learn. We decided to give you a crash course on welding with gas using a Cobra Torch Kit.
First we’re going to show you how to set your pressure on a low pressure regulator. For the oxygen acetylene we always run at four pounds for each with the Cobra Torch. So we’re going to take our knob and turn both right up to five pounds. We like to set it a little high to allow for one pound of line loss. You also want to set your gauge while the gas is flowing so you know you’ll get four at the torch.
Now we’re going to show you how to set your oxy-acetylene flame on the Cobra Welding Torch. First turn about a quarter of a turn on your knob of your oxygen and acetylene and you can light your flame up. Next you want to bring this flame down to a neutral flame. The neutral flame is when you get this real small cone at the beginning the tip of your torch. If you add too much on the oxygen side you have what they call an oxidized flame. It will be extremely hot and it will burn your metal up real fast. This is good for heating or cutting metal but not for welding.
You can use standard TIG wire as filler rod. You want to start by heating the metal and watching the center of the flame where it meets the metal. As you see the metal get “shiny” it is forming a puddle. You can then add a little filler wire to the center of the seam and move the puddle along the seam adding filler wire as you go to join the metal together. If you need to cool the panel or take heat out of the panel to avoid burn through you can pull your flame away from the surface slightly or travel faster along the panel. You will need to practice your technique to match you torch height and travel speed for the best weld. Also always clean and check the back side of your weld for proper fusion after welding.
